Microplastics found on Paphos beaches trigger emergency meeting

Large quantities of microplastics have recently been detected on the coast of Paphos, Cyprus, during a peak period for tourism. Acting Mayor Angelos Onisiforou has convened an emergency meeting to address the pollution, which has also been reported on beaches in other neighboring municipalities. The source of the plastic waste remains unknown at this time. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, at 12:00 p.m. Attendees include representatives from the Department of Environment, the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, health services, and other local municipalities in the Paphos district. The objective is to identify the causes of the pollution, implement immediate cleanup measures, and mitigate negative environmental and tourism-related impacts. Authorities aim to coordinate a swift response to clear the affected areas and prevent further ecological damage.
