Fatal fire at resort in Dominican Republic

A 46-year-old Italian tourist identified as Francesca Valentino (also reported as Balvelino) died following a major fire at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach hotel in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic. The blaze broke out on Friday, prompting the emergency evacuation of approximately 1,700 guests. Authorities stated the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds and the flammable nature of the hotel's thatched roofing. In addition to the fatality, three people were transported to medical centers, while six others received treatment on-site, including guests and rescue personnel. The fire was brought under control, and the displaced guests have been relocated to nearby accommodations. The neighboring Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace hotel remained unaffected by the fire. The Dominican Republic's Emergency Operations Center (COE) is currently conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident. The victim's remains have been moved to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences for further examination before repatriation.
