Earthquakes reported in Gavdos and Thesprotia
On Saturday, June 20, 2026, two significant earthquakes occurred off the coast of Gavdos, Crete. The first tremor measured between 4.6 and 4.7 on the Richter scale with a focal depth of 13.4 kilometers, while the second occurred six minutes later with a magnitude of 5.3 and a depth of 10 kilometers. As a precautionary measure, the Samaria Gorge was evacuated, involving 566 individuals who were inside at the time of the tremors. Authorities reported no landslides within the gorge, and visitors were guided to either the northern or southern exits. Separately, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred earlier in the morning near Leptokarya, Thesprotia, at a depth of 11.6 kilometers. No injuries or structural damages have been reported in either the Crete or Thesprotia incidents. Fire services have been conducting patrols in southern Crete and Gavdos to ensure safety.
