Recent seismic activity in Crete and Thesprotia

On Saturday, two notable earthquakes occurred near the island of Gavdos off the coast of Crete. The first tremor measured 4.7 on the Richter scale, occurring at a depth of 13.4 kilometers, with an epicenter 5 kilometers east-northeast of Gavdos. A second, stronger earthquake of 5.3 or 5.4 magnitude (depending on the source) followed six minutes later at a depth of 10 kilometers, with an epicenter 6 kilometers east of Gavdos. These tremors were felt across the island, but no injuries or structural damage have been reported. Separately, a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred earlier that morning in Thesprotia. The epicenter was located 11 kilometers east-southeast of Leptokarya, at a focal depth of 11.6 kilometers according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. Local police confirmed there were no reports of damage following the seismic activity in the region.
