Nicosia court rules against Odysseas Michaelides in defamation case
The Nicosia District Court has ruled that Odysseas Michaelides, the former Auditor General and current MP, committed defamation against transplant surgeon Dr. Vasilis Hatzianastasiou. The case originated from a February 2015 letter sent by Michaelides to the Health Minister regarding kidney transplant procurement services, which was subsequently circulated to several institutional bodies including the Parliamentary Audit Committee. The court found that terms used by Michaelides in the letter—such as "profiteering," "speculation," "unrealistic offer," and "regime of extortion"—were defamatory and damaged the surgeon’s professional reputation. While the court rejected claims of malicious falsehood and punitive damages, it ordered Michaelides to pay €15,000 in general damages, plus legal interest and costs. Michaelides argued he was acting within his constitutional role to audit public spending, whereas the court determined his language exceeded the bounds of legitimate institutional criticism. The former Auditor General has announced his intention to appeal the ruling. The case highlights ongoing tensions regarding the limits of authority held by independent state officials when addressing private citizens.
