Mapping of dangerous buildings in the Larnaca district reveals high risks
The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has identified 1,050 dangerous buildings in the region, nearly double the 563 structures originally reported on April 1, 2025. Distribution includes 471 buildings in Larnaca municipality, 117 in Lefkara, 65 in Dromolaxia-Meneou, 39 in Aradippou, 12 in Athienou, and 346 in community clusters. Of the first 180 visual inspections conducted by private engineers, 94 were classified as Category C, indicating an immediate risk of collapse. Among these, 31 Category C buildings are occupied, comprising 27 apartment blocks and 4 ground-floor homes, affecting approximately 300 families. Specific residential locations identified include Larnaca city centre, Sotiros, and Chrysopolitissa. Most of the 1,050 buildings are unoccupied and scheduled to be sealed, with property owners required to initiate repairs. The findings have prompted a high-alert status for the DLGO due to the significant risk to residents and the potential housing crisis if evacuations are mandated.
