Cypriot athletes advance to the 100m final at the 78th Balkan Athletics Championships
On the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2026, the 78th Balkan Athletics Championships began at the Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos, Greece. Cypriot sprinters Lampros Christofidis (born 2008) and Antonis Katsantonis (born 2007) successfully qualified for the 100m final, which is scheduled for 21:00 the same day. Lampros Christofidis clocked a personal best of 10.49 seconds, securing a spot for the 2026 World U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon (August 5–9, 2026), and meeting the entry standard for the 2027 European U20 Championships. His performance also marks the 10th fastest time in Cypriot history for men. Antonis Katsantonis finished his heat in 10.33 seconds with an assist from a strong tailwind of +3.1 m/s, having already qualified for the World U20 event. The championship, organized by the Balkan Athletics Association, currently includes 22 member states, including Cyprus, which joined in 2014.
