Cypriot officials discuss UN-led initiative for Cyprus issue resolution
Cypriot political leaders and government representatives have held discussions regarding a renewed diplomatic initiative led by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to break the stalemate in the Cyprus issue. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the coming weeks are critical, as the UN seeks to create conditions for the resumption of substantial negotiations. UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin is conducting a series of contacts in Ankara, Athens, Brussels, and Nicosia to assess the intentions of all involved parties. While Turkey continues to advocate for a two-state solution, the Cypriot government emphasizes that progress will be measured through concrete discussions rather than public rhetoric. President Nikos Christodoulides has also been working to increase the European Union's involvement to provide incentives for Turkey to return to the negotiating table. Odysseas Michaelides of the ALMA party noted that Guterres possesses a deep understanding of the issue, viewing his term ending in December as a potential window of opportunity. The National Council continues to monitor these developments and plans to meet again to evaluate emerging data.
