Cyprus government official discusses efforts to resume peace negotiations
On Sunday, Victoras Papadopoulos, Director of the Press Office of the President of Cyprus, announced that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has a plan to break the deadlock in the Cyprus issue. Speaking at a memorial service in Choulo, Papadopoulos stated that President Nikos Christodoulides has been conducting an international campaign since his election to restart negotiations. The government's goal is to initiate a new UN-led process based on international law, UN resolutions, and European Union values. Additionally, Cyprus is working to involve the European Union directly in the negotiation process. This strategy aims to provide incentives for Turkey to resume talks from where they were previously suspended. The government intends for the EU to ensure that any future settlement remains compatible with the EU acquis communautaire. Papadopoulos emphasized that the coming weeks are critical and called for national unity. The statements reflect the government's current diplomatic push to resolve the long-standing partition of the island.
