History and observance of Father's Day

Father's Day is observed annually on the third Sunday of June to honor fathers and their role in family life. The origins of the holiday are attributed to two different historical events in the United States. One perspective credits Sonora Smart Dodd, who sought to honor her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and widower who raised six children alone after his wife died in 1898. Another historical account links the first memorial observation to a 1907 mining disaster at the Monongah mine. The holiday gained official recognition in the United States as a national celebration in 1972. Today, it is a global observance celebrated in many countries, including Cyprus. It serves as an occasion for families to express gratitude, support, and recognition for the contribution of fathers, grandfathers, and deceased parents to their upbringing and personal development.
