Joint search and rescue exercise held by Turkey and the TRNC
Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot authorities are conducting the 'Caner Gioneli-2026' search and rescue exercise between June 22 and June 26, 2026. The exercise involves land, naval, and air forces, including the Turkish military, the Turkish Cypriot security forces, and the coast guard. The land phase is scheduled in Kyrenia, while the maritime phase will take place off the coast of Famagusta. Major General Ilker Gorgulu, commander of the security forces, stated that the exercise utilizes ships, aircraft, and helicopters to simulate rescue operations for people and vehicles. Official records indicate that 122 such exercises have been held since 2002, with specific coordination through 10 centers in Turkey and 4 in the northern part of Cyprus. While Turkish sources describe the drill as a standard joint operational exercise, the Republic of Cyprus media characterize the activities as illegal. The maneuvers are part of an ongoing schedule of joint military-related drills in the region.
