New parliamentary committees begin work in Cyprus

Following the legislative elections held on May 24, the newly formed Cypriot parliamentary committees have commenced their work this week. The sessions involve four government ministers, the Deputy Minister to the President, and the Auditor General. On Tuesday, June 23, the Committee on Refugees, Enclaved, Missing, and Adversely Affected Persons will review the 2026 Equal Distribution of Burdens Regulations. These proposed amendments include reinstating a 1% interest rate charge for borrowers and removing the six-month deadline for initial loan applications. Simultaneously, the Committee on Foreign and European Affairs will discuss the appointment of the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner for the Regulation of Electronic Communications and Postal Services. Other committees are also scheduled to convene to review various draft laws and public policy matters. The briefings are intended to facilitate the exchange of views between the legislature and the executive branch.
