Cyprus signs contracts for national energy storage systems
The Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSO) and the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CyTA) have signed a €50 million agreement to implement large-scale battery energy storage systems. The project involves a 120MW capacity installation across three substations in Nicosia, Paphos, and Larnaca. Construction is scheduled for January 2027, with full operational status expected by summer 2027. Energy Minister Michael Damianos stated that the batteries aim to mitigate the curtailment of renewable energy by capturing excess solar power for use during peak demand periods. Consultant Christos Tsiggis noted that the system will feature a total capacity of 400 MWh and could reduce residential photovoltaic energy loss by up to 80%. Official data indicates that energy curtailments rose from 1,560 MWh in 2024 to 46,000 MWh in early 2026. The move is designed to enhance the stability and resilience of the national grid as part of the country's broader energy transition strategy.
