Cyprus Transmission System Operator to sign 120 MW battery storage contracts
The Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSM) is set to sign contracts for the installation of centralized electricity storage systems with a total capacity of 120 MW next Tuesday. Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Damianou, stated that this project aims to reduce energy curtailments for photovoltaic producers and improve the integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid. The battery units are scheduled for delivery in January 2027, with installation expected to be completed within two to three months thereafter. The systems are projected to be operational by the summer of 2027, allowing for the utilization of solar energy that is currently wasted due to grid limitations. The initiative is intended to alleviate curtailment issues primarily affecting residential solar energy producers. Additionally, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus is pursuing independent investments in storage technology as part of the broader effort to modernize the system.
