AEL Limassol unlikely to retain Thapelo Maseko after World Cup performance
AEL Limassol has sought to retain 22-year-old winger Thapelo Maseko, who was on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, for the upcoming season. The club originally explored options for a contract extension or a permanent transfer. However, Maseko's performance for South Africa against the Czech Republic in the World Cup has significantly increased his market value. Mamelodi Sundowns is now exclusively pursuing a permanent sale and will no longer consider a loan agreement. The South African club has set an asking price between 500,000 and 700,000 euros, which exceeds AEL Limassol's current financial capabilities. Consequently, AEL is expected to shift its attention to alternative transfer targets. The formal update on the situation was reported on June 20, 2026.
