Calls for independent investigation into the Mafia State report
Political parties in Cyprus, namely DISY and DIKO, are calling for an immediate and transparent investigation into the findings of the Authority Against Corruption regarding the so-called Mafia State case. The report, which has been submitted to the Legal Service, details a series of serious criminal allegations. While the Legal Service has opted to recuse itself from the investigation, the Cabinet is currently considering the appointment of independent criminal investigators. DISY has emphasized its commitment to the rule of law, requesting a clear timeline for the investigation and criticizing AKEL for its political stance. Conversely, AKEL has accused former President Nicos Anastasiades of attempting to manipulate public opinion regarding the findings. DISY maintains that it does not intend to shield anyone and insists that the process must remain free from political interference to avoid contamination of the proceedings. The ongoing dispute between the major political forces reflects heightened tensions ahead of future electoral cycles.
