Escalating political dispute between DISY and AKEL in Cyprus
The political tension between the Democratic Rally (DISY) and the Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) has intensified following the 'Mafia State' report from the Anti-Corruption Authority. DISY Deputy President Efthymios Diplaros accused AKEL of hypocrisy, toxic rhetoric, and attempting to instrumentalize the judicial process for petty political gains. The ruling party argues that only the justice system, not political entities, should decide on legal matters. DISY further demanded the immediate appointment of independent criminal investigators to examine potential offenses mentioned in the report. In response, DISY also launched a sharp attack on AKEL, labeling the party as extremist and accusing it of fostering social division through intimidation and hate speech. DISY claims this strategy is part of AKEL's preparation for the 2028 presidential elections. Meanwhile, DISY defended its own track record while criticizing AKEL's past conduct, including the Mari naval base explosion and the Dromolaxia scandal. Both parties continue to exchange harsh accusations regarding institutional respect and political morality.
