World Music Day celebrations across Cyprus in June 2026
Events marking World Music Day took place across Cyprus in June 2026, featuring performances in various municipalities. On June 19, the PASYDY Paphos choir held a traditional music and poetry event at their Paphos premises, directed by Dr. Stalo Georgiou under the auspices of Stratis Mattheou. On June 21, the Municipality of Paphos hosted concerts across five city locations, including the Public Garden and Kosti Palama Square, covering various musical styles. Meanwhile, Nicosia hosted the 'Make Music Cyprus' festival, which expanded to a three-day event for the first time, involving over 500 artists across the city and neighboring districts like Agios Dometios, Aglantzia, and Engomi. Mayor Charalambos Prountzos noted that the Nicosia festival reached a record number of participants. World Music Day, originally initiated by the French Ministry of Culture in 1982, aims to provide free public access to music. Celebrations involved diverse performances ranging from classical harp ensembles to French chansons and local folk traditions.
