National Council meets to discuss Cyprus issue developments

On June 22, 2026, the National Council of Cyprus convened under President Nicos Christodoulides to address the latest developments regarding the Cyprus issue. This meeting follows the recent visit of María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, to the region. The session involves a newly formed council, including representatives from the newly elected parties Alma and Direct Democracy, alongside all parliamentary party leaders. President Christodoulides highlighted the period as being of decisive importance, aiming for internal unity to facilitate an expanded meeting that could lead to the resumption of formal negotiations. Discussions also incorporated reports on the President's recent visit to Brussels and his meetings with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa. Additional focus was placed on the potential appointment of a new EU envoy for Cyprus and the strategic objective of linking EU-Turkish relations with the Cyprus negotiation process. Leaders of parties no longer represented in parliament, who previously participated in the council, will also be briefed separately by the President.
