UN efforts to resume Cyprus negotiations
United Nations Personal Envoy María Ángela Holguín is currently in New York for consultations regarding the Cyprus issue, with meetings scheduled with UN Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo and Secretary-General António Guterres. These discussions are aimed at finalizing plans for an informal five-plus-one multilateral meeting, targeted for late July or early August. Following her time in New York, Holguín is expected to travel to Brussels for meetings with EU officials, including Antonio Costa. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council is scheduled to review reports on the peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) and the good offices mission on July 16, with a briefing from UNFICYP chief Khassim Diagne expected during the second week of July. Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that there is currently no official information regarding a potential second multilateral meeting, emphasizing that the focus remains on ensuring the success of the upcoming informal gathering. Local political debate continues regarding the framework of future negotiations, with discussions ranging from federal solutions to concerns over potential new governance models. Following her return to Cyprus, Holguín is expected to hold further consultations with President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman.
