UN Secretary-General meets personal envoy to discuss Cyprus issue
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is meeting with his Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, at UN headquarters in New York on Friday. The discussion aims to review the outcomes of Holguin’s recent diplomatic missions to Nicosia, Ankara, and Athens. During these consultations, she gathered perspectives from various stakeholders, including President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. The UN is exploring the possibility of holding an informal 5+1 meeting in either New York or Geneva in late July or early August to resume formal negotiations. Following the New York meeting, Holguin will travel to Brussels for talks with European Union officials before returning to Cyprus for further local discussions. Separately, UN Special Representative Khassim Diagne briefed the diplomatic community on UNFICYP activities ahead of his scheduled reporting to the Security Council. UN reports concerning Good Offices and the peacekeeping force are expected in early July 2026. The Security Council is scheduled to hold closed consultations on the Cyprus file on July 16.
