Cypriot EU Presidency concludes final AgriFish Council meeting

The final Agriculture and Fisheries (AgriFish) Council meeting under the Cypriot Presidency was held on Monday in Luxembourg. Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou presided over the sessions. The meeting emphasized the strategic importance of agriculture and fisheries for European food security and sustainability. Discussions focused on regulatory changes for fishing opportunities and the future of the Common Fisheries Policy regarding 2027 targets. Key international agreements were reported to have advanced ocean governance roles for the EU. In the agricultural sector, the Presidency addressed challenges including geopolitical uncertainty, climate pressures, and rising production costs. Initiatives were proposed to support rural communities within the next Multiannual Financial Framework. Progress was also noted regarding income stability for farmers during the current six-month term.
