Extreme heatwave impacts western and central Europe
A severe heatwave driven by an African anticyclone is impacting much of Western and Central Europe, with temperatures forecast to reach 40-42 degrees Celsius. France is the hardest-hit nation, placing 49 departments under a red alert and closing over 800 schools while adjusting schedules for thousands more. The French government has implemented crisis measures, including bans on public alcohol consumption during the Fête de la Musique to alleviate pressure on emergency services. Rail operator SNCF has cancelled services and increased monitoring of infrastructure. Beyond France, red and orange alerts have been issued in Italy for eight cities, including Milan and Rome, while Spain and Germany are reporting temperatures approaching 38-40 degrees. Meteorologists note that these temperatures are 8-15 degrees above the seasonal average, comparing the event to major heatwaves in 2003 and 2019. The extreme conditions are expected to persist throughout the week, causing significant strain on public services and infrastructure across the continent.
