Eurostat reports fuel and lubricant price trends for May 2026

According to Eurostat data released on Monday, fuel and lubricant prices for personal transport in Cyprus increased by 20.5% in May 2026 compared to May 2025. This rise is closely aligned with the European Union average of 20.7%. Across the EU, prices increased in all member states, with Bulgaria (33.9%), Luxembourg (32.2%), Lithuania (30.8%), and Romania (30.4%) recording the highest surges. Hungary reported the lowest increase at 3.5%. Following a general downward trend until February 2026, prices shifted upward in subsequent months. Across the EU, diesel prices rose by 29% year-on-year, while gasoline increased by 16.2%. On a monthly basis, EU diesel prices fell by 5.8% compared to April 2026, while gasoline prices rose slightly by 0.8%. In Cyprus, diesel prices saw a 1.5% decrease between April and May 2026, which was less significant than the reductions seen in countries like Germany (-11.9%) and Greece (-8.5%).
