DIKO party supports President Christodoulides' initiatives on the Cyprus issue
Following a meeting of the National Council, Nicolas Papadopoulos, president of the DIKO party, announced the party's support for President Nikos Christodoulides' recent diplomatic efforts regarding the Cyprus issue. President Christodoulides briefed the National Council on his recent contacts and discussed potential next steps to resume negotiations. The DIKO party advocates for the UN Secretary-General to convene an expanded international conference as soon as possible. Papadopoulos expressed hope that this meeting would lead to the resumption of formal negotiations based on the agreed framework and relevant UN resolutions. The party emphasizes that the European Union has a crucial role to play in this process. According to DIKO, the EU should use its influence over Euro-Turkish relations to pressure Turkey into participating constructively in talks. Furthermore, Papadopoulos stated that political parties must undertake initiatives at the European level to encourage this process. The goal is to move beyond the current impasse and persuade the Turkish side to abandon positions that block the restart of negotiations.
