Annita Demetriou calls for unity following National Council meeting on Cyprus issue
Following a session of the National Council, Annita Demetriou, President of the House of Representatives and the Democratic Rally (DISY), emphasized the need for a strategic approach to the Cyprus issue. She stated that new opportunities are emerging, necessitating serious management rather than overreaction or complacency. Demetriou noted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is actively working toward convening a new expanded conference to resume negotiations. She highlighted that Turkey's aspirations regarding the European Union could serve as leverage, provided Ankara abandons its two-state solution demand. Furthermore, she advocated for the appointment of a special EU envoy to the Cyprus issue to facilitate progress. Demetriou stressed that national interest must supersede partisan agendas. She concluded that internal unity is essential to strengthen the state's position on the international stage.
