Annita Demetriou reaffirms commitment to resuming Cyprus peace negotiations
President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus, Annita Demetriou, recently held a ceremonial meeting with Archbishop Georgios following her re-election. During her statements, she emphasized the Greek Cypriot side's commitment to resuming negotiations within the established UN framework at the point where they were previously halted. Addressing comments made by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman regarding a potential 5+5 meeting, Demetriou declined to provide a direct critique but noted that diplomatic efforts are ongoing. She highlighted that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is actively working toward a new expanded conference to restart talks. Demetriou stated that Turkey's ambitions regarding the European Union could serve as leverage, provided Ankara abandons the 'two-state' solution model. She further advocated for the appointment of an EU envoy to the Cyprus issue to assist in progress. Concluding her remarks, she urged national unity and strategic coordination, warning against both overreaction and complacency in handling these regional developments.
