Dimitris Avramopoulos denies involvement in Qatargate amidst Belgian legal proceedings
Belgian authorities are investigating former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos regarding his involvement with the non-governmental organization Fight Impunity, founded by Antonio Panzeri, in connection with the Qatargate corruption scandal. While reports state that Belgian authorities have issued an arrest warrant, the warrant cannot be executed due to Avramopoulos's parliamentary status. A formal request for the waiver of his parliamentary immunity has been sent to the Greek judicial authorities. Prosecutors allege that payments received by the former Commissioner originated from a network under investigation for illegal activities. Avramopoulos maintains that his participation in the organization was lawful, fully disclosed, and taxed, noting it was previously approved by the European Commission under Ursula von der Leyen three years ago. He has rejected all allegations of misconduct and announced he will not invoke his parliamentary immunity. Instead, he intends to seek an investigation by the Greek judiciary to clear his name. The case remains under legal review as the documentation moves through the Greek Ministry of Justice and the Hellenic Parliament.
