EU-UK summit status under review following Keir Starmer's resignation
Following the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the European Union and the UK are currently re-evaluating the status of a bilateral summit scheduled for July 22 in Brussels. European Council President Antonio Costa expressed his intention for the next British leader to continue the effort to recalibrate EU-UK relations, despite his initial remarks suggesting the event should be postponed. European Commission representatives confirmed that the possibility of maintaining the original schedule is still being assessed. The summit was intended to be the second of its kind since Brexit, following a meeting in London in May 2025. Starmer’s departure occurs on the eve of the 10th anniversary of the 2016 Brexit referendum. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen thanked Starmer for his contributions to European and Ukrainian security. While EU officials emphasized that their commitment to strong relations with the UK remains, the logistical future of the upcoming summit remains officially undecided.
