Green movement calls for resignation of attorney general and deputy attorney general

The Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation has officially requested the resignation of the Attorney General and the Deputy Attorney General of Cyprus. The party argues that this step is necessary to ensure the credibility of future criminal investigations and potential court proceedings arising from a report by the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority. The party advocates for the appointment of independent criminal investigators and an independent public prosecutor. They specifically object to the involvement of the so-called 'Prosecutorial Council' in reviewing the 3,000-page report, noting the Attorney General's long-standing friendship with former President Nicos Anastasiades. The party also criticized the 2022 rejection of their legislative proposal to grant investigative powers to the Anti-Corruption Authority. They expressed support for efforts by certain members of parliament to revive the proposal to empower the Authority. Currently, the 3,000-page report remains scheduled for review by the Prosecutorial Council, a body the Green Movement claims is accountable to the Attorney General.
