Tufan Erhurman comments on Cyprus settlement negotiations

Tufan Erhurman, leader of the Republican Turkish Party, has expressed support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' initiatives regarding the Cyprus problem. Erhurman stated that the Turkish Cypriot community remains committed to a solution but will not engage in open-ended processes that risk returning the parties to square one. He highlighted the failures of 2004 and 2017 as precedents to be avoided. Regarding current discourse in the Greek Cypriot press, Erhurman characterized much of the speculation as unfounded and baseless. He maintained that no specific proposals have reached a level of maturity requiring public debate. The Turkish Cypriot leader emphasized that in any '5+1' format, the final decisions rest with the two communities and the three guarantor nations. He concluded by assuring the Turkish Cypriot public that they would be informed appropriately once substantive discussions emerge.
