Acting Mayor of Paphos discusses long-standing harbor issues with fishermen
Angelos Onisiforou, the Acting Mayor of Paphos, recently met with local fishermen to address long-standing infrastructure concerns at the Paphos harbor. The primary issue discussed was the planned extension of the harbor mouth, a project that has been under discussion for decades. Onisiforou stated that while engineering plans, funding, and technical expertise are available, the project remains stalled due to a lack of political will. Government officials have reportedly cited the presence of underwater antiquities at the site as a justification for the delay. The Acting Mayor criticized the ongoing bureaucratic obstacles, arguing that fishermen are forced to manually protect their vessels from winter storms. He emphasized that it is not the responsibility of private owners to act as harbor guards. Furthermore, he noted that the protection of the Medieval Castle of Paphos remains a significant parallel concern.
