Cyprus government meets on UN initiative and seeks new EU envoy

On Monday, President Nikos Christodoulides convened the National Council to discuss the latest UN peace initiative for Cyprus. The meeting included six parliamentary leaders, including new participants Odysseas Michaelides and Fidias Panayiotou, alongside various government officials and the Foreign Minister. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized the necessity of national unity, though critics noted a lack of substantive debate given the low expectations for the UN process. Separately, President Christodoulides announced on Thursday in Brussels that he is pursuing the appointment of a new European Commission special envoy for the Cyprus problem. This follows the resignation of former commissioner Johannes Hahn, who stepped down in early 2026 after 10 months in the role. The President's move occurs in parallel with the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. While the President seeks a more active EU role, the effectiveness of an EU envoy remains a subject of domestic debate.
