Nicosia road improvement project and traffic disruptions

The Nicosia Municipality has initiated roadworks under the project 'Appropriate construction of various roads in Nicosia — Contract 23 City Centre,' funded by the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility. Construction began on June 19, 2026, affecting Kritis Street, from Digeni Akrita Avenue to Stasandrou Street, and Filippiados Street, with closures expected to last approximately two months. Works include stormwater drainage, pavement accessibility upgrades, road resurfacing, and improved signage. While the Municipality emphasizes long-term benefits for infrastructure and accessibility, residents and business owners report significant disruption, including heavy congestion on Androklis Street and difficulty for clients accessing nearby medical and business facilities. Temporary traffic lights have been installed at the junction of Androklis and Stasandrou streets to manage redirected traffic. Further street reopenings are scheduled throughout 2026, including Kypranoros Street on June 24, Kalavryton Street on July 15, and Orfeos, Naxou, Crete, and Filippiados streets on August 11. Drivers are advised to follow temporary signs and traffic diversions.
