Tourists encounter volcanic eruption at Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala
A group of hikers visiting the Volcan de Fuego volcano in Guatemala faced a sudden eruption while near the crater. Participant Anna Garcia reported that falling volcanic rocks burned her jacket and narrowly missed her head. The event, which occurred during their ascent, was partially captured on video by the hikers. Researchers note that Volcan de Fuego is consistently active, experiencing small gas and ash emissions every 15 to 20 minutes. Historically, the volcano has erupted over 60 times since 1524, though fatal eruptions are relatively rare. A significant eruption on June 3, 2018, resulted in over 100 deaths and severe destruction of nearby towns. Despite the inherent risks of the area, the volcano remains a destination for hikers.
