Conjoined twins successfully separated in Abu Dhabi using AI-assisted surgery

Mercy and Goodness, twin sisters born in Ekiti, Nigeria, in June 2023 with fused skulls and shared brain tissue, have been successfully separated. The infants were referred to the Gemini Untwined charity in the United Kingdom when they were six months old. In 2025, the children traveled to the Sheikh Khalifa Medical City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, for a series of procedures spanning four months. A multidisciplinary team of over 60 healthcare professionals from the UAE, UK, Nigeria, and Brazil performed the operation. The procedure lasted over 40 hours and utilized advanced artificial intelligence technology to plan and execute the separation. This case marks the ninth known surgical separation of craniopagus twins. Craniopagus twins are extremely rare, occurring in approximately one in 2.5 million births, with high mortality rates for affected infants.
