Marco Rubio visits Gulf states to discuss US-Iran deal
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is conducting a diplomatic tour from June 23 to June 25, 2026, to present a preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran to Gulf nations. The tour includes visits to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain, where he will meet with officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman. The agreement aims to end the war that began on February 28, 2026, following U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Gulf nations have expressed concerns regarding specific terms, including the lack of restrictions on Iran's ballistic missile program and the creation of a 300 billion dollar reconstruction fund. There are fears that Iran could use these funds to rebuild its military capabilities and expand its influence over critical oil transport routes. These regional states, which provided logistical support to the U.S. during the conflict, feel surprised and concerned by the memorandum of understanding. The diplomatic mission seeks to address regional security shifts and alleviate concerns regarding Tehran's strengthening position.
