Omer Celik announces Erdogan as AKP presidential candidate

Omer Celik, spokesperson for the Justice and Development Party (AKP), announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be the party's candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. This decision follows a meeting of the party's Central Committee, where officials expressed unified support for his candidacy. The AKP also acknowledged support from Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), affirming the stability of the People's Alliance. On June 15, presidential advisor Mehmet Ucum suggested that a parliamentary decision to renew elections could facilitate Erdogan's bid. To initiate such a process, a majority of 360 out of 600 votes in the Turkish Grand National Assembly is required. While the AKP frames this as a clear path forward, political analysts note that the constitutional process remains tied to legislative thresholds.
