European federation of journalists holds annual congress in Ankara
The European Federation of Journalists held its annual congress in Ankara on June 18–19, 2026. Representatives from across Europe, including Cyprus Journalists Union president Giorgos Frangos and board member Stelios Marathovouniotis, discussed the risks posed by generative artificial intelligence. Data presented indicated that tools like Google's AI Overviews can reduce organic traffic to news sites by up to 40 percent. The federation adopted a resolution demanding fair compensation for journalists and media outlets from online service providers. Delegates also addressed the implementation of the EU Anti-SLAPP Directive, noting that 91.5 percent of strategic lawsuits against public participation occur within domestic jurisdictions, and urged the adoption of stronger national laws. Additional resolutions focused on press freedom in Turkey and creating pathways for digital content creators, such as those on TikTok and Substack, to join professional unions.
