EU approves financial aid for Cyprus and other member states following natural disasters
The European Parliament's Committee on Budgets has unanimously approved the mobilization of 144.1 million euros from the EU Solidarity Fund to support recovery efforts in Cyprus, Romania, and Spain following natural disasters in 2025. Cyprus is allocated 9.21 million euros to address the consequences of July 2025 wildfires in the Limassol and Paphos regions, which resulted in two deaths, thousands of evacuations, and damage to approximately 900 properties. The country has already received an initial advance of 2.3 million euros. Furthermore, EU member states have approved an additional 4.6 million euros in agricultural aid for Cyprus to mitigate losses from prolonged drought and extreme heat experienced since May 2025. Total agricultural funding across multiple countries exceeds 56 million euros, supporting farmers affected by various climate events. The final disbursement from the Solidarity Fund requires formal approval by the European Parliament and the Council, with a plenary vote expected in July 2026. Separately, Romania will receive 14.34 million euros for flood damage, while Spain is set to receive 120.55 million euros for wildfire recovery.
