Parliamentary Labour Committee holds first session post-elections

The House Standing Committee on Labour, Welfare, and Social Insurance held its first meeting on Tuesday following the May legislative elections. Committee Chairman Giorgos Koukoumas, an AKEL Member of Parliament, announced that the initial session focused on procedural planning and addressing pending legislative proposals from the previous term. Key agenda items include the implementation of disability legislation, pension reform, and the adoption of EU directives regarding adequate minimum wages. A primary objective is the expansion of collective labour agreements to protect workers. The committee is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance and the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare on July 7 to discuss government priorities. Pension reforms are slated for detailed discussion starting in September, with a stated focus on preventing pensioner poverty. The committee emphasized its commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable social groups.
