Public sector unions oppose proposed changes to sick leave policy
Public sector unions in Cyprus, including the Isotita trade union, have formally opposed government proposals regarding the modification of sick leave regulations. The unions state they will not accept any reduction in benefits or changes to the existing framework for sick leave. The Isotita union specifically criticized the government for creating a negative climate against police officers, prison guards, and other state employees. They argue that high stress, physical wear, and trauma in these professions naturally lead to higher morbidity rates, which should not be viewed as suspicious. The union maintains that current mechanisms for verifying sick leave, such as medical certificates and medical boards, are already sufficient and strictly regulated. Meanwhile, other public sector unions are awaiting further formal government and parliamentary decisions before deciding on potential protest actions. The unions emphasize that the right to sick leave is a fundamental entitlement that must not be compromised.
