Board of Peace to convene in Cyprus for strategy recalibration

Representatives of the U.S.-led Board of Peace are scheduled to meet in Cyprus next week to address the stagnation of postwar governance plans for Gaza. The meeting will include members of the Board of Peace’s executive committee, representatives of the Palestinian-run committee for the administration of Gaza, and the office of High Representative Nikolay Mladenov. This gathering aims to recalibrate initiatives following six months of limited progress since the board’s formation in January and the opening of the Rafah crossing in February. While the initiative initially aimed to establish a new Palestinian administration and international stabilization force, implementation has been stalled by regional tensions and a lack of progress in disarmament negotiations. Reports suggest the Palestinian technocratic team remains based in Cairo, and promised donor funds have not yet been disbursed. The Cypriot government has maintained an observer status in accordance with European Union policy, as the bloc seeks a common position. Concurrently, reports indicate ongoing violence, with multiple accounts of Palestinian civilian casualties by Israeli Defense Forces during this period.
