Trial proceedings against suspended Paphos mayor to resume

The Paphos Assize Court is set to resume proceedings today in the case of suspended Paphos mayor Phaedon Phaedonos, who faces four criminal charges. These charges include rape, indecent assault, drugging with intent to commit a crime, and causing actual bodily harm. The case was previously delayed on May 28 after Judge Nikodemos Fakontis requested to recuse himself due to potential impartiality concerns. Following the Supreme Court's decision on June 12, Judge Maria Socratous has been appointed to the panel, which now consists of Lia Markou, Theodoros Symeonidis, and Maria Socratous. Mr. Phaedonos is expected to enter a plea today, and he is widely anticipated to plead not guilty to all counts. If he enters a not guilty plea, the court is expected to schedule the substantive trial for early September. Prosecutors are also expected to request that the proceedings be held behind closed doors. The court previously conducted the April 21 committal hearing in a closed session.
