Larnaca authorities grant extension for Filanta apartment building repairs
The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) has granted a short extension to the owners of the Filanta apartment complex regarding urgent structural repairs. The building, located near the Larnaca port, is considered the city's largest structure at risk of collapse, consisting of five blocks, 79 apartments, and ten shops owned by over 90 individuals. On June 19, authorities issued official notices to owners, providing a three-day deadline to initiate safety measures. Although this deadline expired on June 23, DLGO President Angelos Hadjicharalambous announced a further two to three-day grace period for owners who commit to appointing an engineer and presenting a remediation plan. The complex gained significant attention on May 27, when a foreign national died and two others were injured after jumping from balconies during an immigration enforcement operation. Inspections have revealed severe sanitation issues, overcrowded living conditions, and illegal utility connections. If owners fail to comply with the new deadline, the DLGO intends to proceed with an evacuation and seek a court-ordered enforcement mandate.
