First session of the National Council following the May 24th elections
The National Council of Cyprus held its first meeting following the legislative elections of May 24th. This session marked the inaugural participation of newly elected members, including Fidias Panayiotou, leader of the Direct Democracy party. The assembly met to discuss the status of the Cyprus issue, which was characterized during the meeting as being at a critical juncture. During the proceedings, Panayiotou maintained a reserved presence, noting a lack of prior political experience. Following the meeting, he stated that his party currently lacks a formal position on the Cyprus issue. He announced plans to engage in public consultation to develop a policy once there is increased diplomatic activity regarding the matter. While the event is part of the standard post-election democratic process, the presence of new political figures has prompted diverse commentary regarding the evolving composition of the council.
