First confirmed Ebola case reported in France
French health authorities have confirmed the first case of the Ebola virus on national soil in a doctor who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The patient has been placed in isolation, and contact tracing procedures have been initiated to prevent further spread. The French government, including Prime Minister Stephane Le Foll, is monitoring the situation closely, though officials emphasize that the risk to the general European population remains low. The current outbreak in the DRC, which involves the Bundibugyo strain for which there is no vaccine or specific treatment, was officially declared on May 15. The epidemic, which originated in the Ituri province, has infected over 1,000 people and resulted in 267 deaths, according to the World Health Organization. The WHO notes that this is the highest number of confirmed cases recorded in the first month of an Ebola outbreak. Over the past 50 years, more than 15,000 deaths have been attributed to Ebola across Africa.
