Legal Service decides not to prosecute former MP Nikos Sykas
The Legal Service of the Republic of Cyprus announced that it will not initiate criminal proceedings against former Limassol MP Nikos Sykas. The decision was reached following a police investigation into allegations of violence against women. Authorities stated that while cases of gender-based violence are prioritized regardless of victim cooperation, the available evidence was insufficient to secure a conviction in court. The complainant withdrew her participation, and her testimony was deemed essential for the legal process. The remaining collected evidence was reviewed but found inadequate to support formal charges, while the presumption of innocence for the suspect remains in place. Consequently, the case will remain pending for a period of one year. The state emphasized that support and protection services remain available to the complainant.
