Death of David Hunter following his release from prison in Cyprus

David Hunter, a 79-year-old British retiree and former coal miner, died in a Paphos hospital last Wednesday. Hunter had been living in Tremithousa, Cyprus, with his 75-year-old wife, Janice Lesley Hunter, who suffered from terminal leukaemia. On December 18, 2021, police arrested Hunter at their home after he caused his wife's death by obstructing her breathing, which he stated was a mercy killing requested by her due to unbearable pain. Following the incident, Hunter attempted suicide by consuming pills and alcohol. He was subsequently charged with murder and held in custody for 19 months. In July 2023, the Paphos Criminal Court sentenced him to two years in prison for manslaughter, taking into account time already served. This sentencing allowed for his immediate release from the Central Prisons. Hunter had expressed relief at his release, noting that it would allow him to properly mourn his wife at her grave.
