Dispute over the status of the Russia-US Alaska summit agreements
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US officials are in a dispute over whether a formal agreement was reached during a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska last August. Russia maintains that an agreement, sometimes referred to as the 'Spirit of Anchorage,' was established regarding the resolution of the war in Ukraine, including terms for withdrawing Ukrainian forces from the Donbas. However, US official Marco Rubio denied that a binding deal was made, characterizing the discussions only as proposals. Lavrov contends that Putin reviewed specific US proposals brought by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff and that Witkoff confirmed them point-by-point. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed appreciation for US mediation efforts but noted that the US cannot effectively mediate while supporting one side in the conflict. Concerns remain within the Kremlin that the US has not upheld its commitments, with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov accusing Washington of deviating from key understandings. Discussions are further complicated by ongoing Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries and the involvement of negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in other international crises.
